In our last Music Monday calendar we played a doc that blew everyone who saw it away. It was WHO IS HARRY NILSSON & WHY IS EVERYBODY TALKIN' ABOUT HIM?
We see a lot of music documentaries but few have ever been this comprehensive or loving. Through spectacularly rare clips and a huge assortment of judiciously edited interviews with the people who knew him best, we really get to know who he was and why his music and his life were so important. When I made my top ten list this year, it was one of the no-brainers. The only bad thing about the screening was that for the next few weeks, it was impossible to find any Harry Nilsson albums at the record stores because so many people who saw the movie ran out and bought them all.
If you only know Nilsson from his hits, "Without You," "Everybody's Talkin'" and the one about putting the lime in the coconut, then you only know part of the story. The full story is as beautiful and as insane as the times he lived in: the musical triumphs, the financial ruin, the wild monthlong benders with John Lennon and Keith Moon, the decadent high life, the success, the heartbreak, the genius. It's like a big, satisfying pulpy biography with great music.
So we're bringing it back to Music Monday this week. This time I'll be joined by Nilsson superfan Audra Scroeder of the Austin Chronicle to put Nilsson's continuing influence and greatness in context.
As one person said to me after the screening, "This guy was a giant of music. Why aren't we talking about him all the time? Why aren't we listening to him RIGHT NOW?" That's a great question. Why aren't you? Here's a little something to tide you over till the screening.
