January's Sommelier Cinema event with VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA and a flight of four Catalan wines was one of the greatest nights we've ever spent at the Alamo. The wine was delightful, the film charming, and the surprise addition of a cheese sampling from Austin's hottest fromage spot, Antonelli's Cheese Shop, was absolutely divine.
We're making this wine and cheese night a regular thing at the Alamo, and our second event is less than two weeks away! On Tuesday, April 5th, at 7pm, we're showing the most beautiful and heart-wrenching French film in Froggy history, JULES AND JIM. If you've seen this masterpiece, you know you're in for a whirlwind of love, passion, freedom, and whim. If you're unacquainted, please be prepared to have a new favorite film.
Our guest sommeliers this month are Rachel Wilson, educator from Wine for the People, and Darcie Fromholz, from the great Austin restaurant Wink. They've been watching and re-watching JULES AND JIM and exploring how best to pair a flight of wines with this film that spans decades across France, Gemany and Austria. Finally, they've come to a consensus and prepared this celebration of a flight. You'll be going on a tasting journey through Europe's finest and most exquisite wines, tasting the best of some wines you may know, and being introduced to wines that are hugely popular overseas but relatively unknown here.
Theo Minges Riesling Halbtrocken 2008
Like a bright star in a glass, this lean yet explosive Riesling is a perfect example of the style found most often in Germany. The chalky mineral notes are balanced by a full array of tropical flavors on the nose and palate. Perfectly suited to the country chalet on the Rhine.
Jean-Marc Burgaud Beaujolais 2008
Despite the influx of Beaujolais Nouveaux each third Thursday of November, Beaujolais can be a very serious wine. First cultivated by the Romans, then tended by the Benedictine monks through the Middle Ages, it has a storied past. The grape is Gamay and this one is from the village of Lantignié, just outside the reach of the Rhone. The steep hillsides and granite soil yield a bright garnet color and a fresh, fruity nose and palate. A great summer quaffer.
Domaine de L'Ameillaud Vin de Pays de la Principaute d'Orange 2009
The southern Rhone Valley produces the wines "for the people" for all of France. The truest expression of regional terroir is apparent in the notes of coffee, fig, blue and blackberries. Table wines from this region are available at bistros from Paris to Marseilles. Perfect with a variety of cheeses.
Renardat-Fache Cerdon de Bugey N/V
This little number is very old school and delightful - primarily Gamay but with a bit of Pouslard (another of the obscure French blending grapes), The Bugey has a hint of bubbles; it's not a true sparkler, but has enough carbonation to tickle the tongue and the nose. This was most certainly due to happy coincidence rather than plan- at least at first. Lots of citrus and berries, perhaps a hint of rhubarb, this one pairs surprisingly well with spicy foods.

Darcie and Rae will give a short presentation about the wines, their history, and why they were chosen. We’ll also get a quick lesson in how to drink wine, what to look for in these particular varietals/blends/regions, and why drinking these fine wines is the ultimate pleasure.
Once we’ve learned about the finer points of our beverages, then it’s time to watch the film and sip passionately.
