In 2010 the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company of Chico, California celebrated its 30th anniversary and to mark the occasion they brewed four limited edition beers, released one at a time throughout the year, in collaboration with other pioneers of the US craft brewing scene.
The first beer was Fritz [Maytag - former owner of Anchor Brewing in San Francisco] and Ken [Grossman - owner of Sierra Nevada]'s Ale, a full-bodied imperial stout oozing with coffee, chocolate and other high-roasted malt flavours, with a hint of hoppy bitterness.
A month or two later, Charlie [Papazian - homebrewing guru and founder of the Brewers Association], Fred [Eckhardt - beer writer and historian] and Ken's Bock hit the shelves. This is an imperial helles bock - gently toasted malt flavours, some floral hops and a bit of spicy fruitiness.
The third beer - Jack [McAuliffe - founder of the short-lived but legendary New Albion microbrewery] and Ken's Ale - was a black barley wine. All the malty complexity of a barley wine melded with the dark roasted malt character of a stout or a porter.
The final offering - Sierra Nevada Brewers Reserve - is perhaps the most special. It's a blend of oak-aged Bigfoot barley wine, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and SN's Christmas seasonal, Sierra Celebration, all of which has been generously dry-hopped. It doesn't get much better than that.
We're pairing these exquisite beers with a feast and a screening of the very-awesome Humphrey 1941 film HIGH SIERRA on April 18 in an event that is not to be missed. HIGH SIERRA stars Humphrey Bogart and Ida Lupino in a tale of forbidden love and a heist gone wrong.
