Every month the Alamo Drafthouse - Houston teams up with 8th Dimension Comics & Games and Ain't It Cool News for free screenings of classic family friendly films. This month we're celebrating the 1938 classic THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD. This faithful retelling of the legend of Robin Hood stars Errol Flynn as Robin, Earl of Locklsey, a heroic bandit who steals from the rich to give to the poor.

One of the most extragavant pictures of its time, THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD cost nearly $2 million to produce. Among the films' more memorable stunts is a scene in which Robin Hood fires an arrow — hitting the bullseye and splitting the earlier arrow of Philip de Arras. To this day, this stunt still confounds experts who can't seem to agree on how it was pulled off. One thing that is known, though, is that padded stunt men were paid $150 an arrow in exchange for being shot at by professional archer Howard Hill. Would you take that deal?

When the film was released, it was the second-highest grossing movie of the year — with just over $4 million in revenue. Remember, this was at a time when movie tickets were on average less than 25 cents.

Nominated for Best Picture at the 1938 Academy Awards, the film has been recognized time and time again since for its outstanding nature — appearing on multiple American Film Institute lists.

See the movie yourself with a free screening on Saturday, February 25 at noon at Mason Park. See you there!
