With the birth of Internet film sites, the lid was really thrown off the wild and weird underground world of film. There were no more “cult films.” Every film, no matter how small and strange, had a massive fandom that has seen itself rewarded with revival screenings, collectibles, and special DVD editions. But REPO MAN is a film that can still proudly own the label “cult film.” It still lurks on the fringes of cinema. It’s just too unusual to be repackaged as a Hot Topic t-shirt line.
Released in 1984, REPO MAN is the strange and surreal adventure of Otto Maddox (Emilio Estevez), a punk rocker who is sullenly suffering as a supermarket stock clerk, until he meets repossession man Bud (Harry Dean Stanton). Bud introduces him to the alluring life of repossessing cars for the Helping Hand Acceptance Corporation. Otto enjoys his new fast and furious lifestyle – hotwiring cars, taking drugs, speeding through streets – until he gets more than he bargained for when he meets a girl named Leila (Olivia Barash), who tells him a certain 1964 Malibu has four dead space aliens in its trunk. The hunt is on for the Malibu, which may be more risk than reward…
Alamo Drafthouse Littleton is excited to announce that REPO MAN will be coming to our theater on April 12th at 7:00pm, and will be our first 35mm screening. We are one of only a few theaters in Denver offering 35mm projection, which will mean we can screen a wide variety of classic films, and maintain their original, beautiful aesthetic.
REPO MAN will also be our first screening with the filmmaker in attendance. Director Alex Cox will be here in person to present the film, and will remain for a Q&A afterwards. It promises to be an exciting and illuminating discussion, and one no film fan will want to miss.
Cox is currently spearheading a Kickstarter campaign to fund his next film, BILL THE GALACTIC HERO, which he hopes to film at our own University of Colorado, where he is currently teaching film production and screenwriting. If you’re a fan of Cox (or even just of local filmmaking), take a moment to check out his Kickstarter page, and if you can, contribute something to what promises to be a unique production that would make our state proud.
Our full food and drink menu will be available at this screening, and you are welcome to pop up as many order cards as you need so that you’re well supplied with food and drink during the film and its Q&A. You can also order a drink right at our ticket counter, and take it to the theater, so that you’re fully refreshed by the time Otto gets behind the wheel. Glass Half Full will also be open, and if you want to linger to discuss all things REPO MAN and indulge in more adult beverages and Drafthouse dining, this is the place to do it. Remember, you can visit Glass Half Full without a movie ticket, so if you need to take a break from your fast and furious lifestyle, we’re always here.
Tickets for REPO MAN with Alex Cox in attendance are on sale now. Please don’t miss this unique opportunity to engage with an amazing filmmaker, and see REPO MAN in gorgeous 35mm!
