A standout from the red deluge of immortal sapphic stories was DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS, a French, Belgian, and German collaboration helmed by Harry Kümel. When chaotic newlywed couple Valerie (Danielle Ouimet) and Stefan (John Karlen) arrive at a grand hotel on the Ostend seafront during the off-season, they initially seem to be the only guests in residence. That is, until the glamorous and preternaturally youthful Hungarian countess Elizabeth Báthory (Delphine Seyrig) arrives with her icy secretary Ilona (Andrea Rau). The Countess quickly becomes fixated on Valerie, and the dubious honeymoon is thrown into bizarre and erotic disarray.

\nProgress is not a straight line. I mean, I’m not sure it’s a line at all. It seems far more abstract and subjective. Like, listen: in 1996, when THE BIRDCAGE was first released, the idea of a mainstream comedy film with two gay leads (and many more openly queer characters) was controversial. I guess, unfortunately…it still is.
\nBased on the French farce film LA CAGE AUX FOLLES from 1978, Mike Nichols and Elaine May’s adaptation shifts the action from a drag club in the French Riviera to a drag club in South Beach, Florida…the American Riviera. When Armand Goldman (Robin Williams) learns that his son Val (Dan Futterman) is engaged to the daughter of conservative couple Senator Kevin Keeley (Gene Hackman) and Louise Keeley (Dianne Wiest), he’s put into an impossible situation. Pushed by Val to “straighten” out his life in preparation for meeting his fiancée Barbara’s (Calista Flockhart) parents, Armand struggles to manage his life partner Albert (Nathan Lane) with some dubious assistance from their housemaid Agador (Hank Azaria) and Val’s birth mother Katharine (Christine Brianski). Shenanigans ensue: there’s drag, Fosse, pierced toast, beckoning schmecken, and of course DRAG! WHEW! Grounded by hilarious and deeply heartfelt performances from Williams and Lane, THE BIRDCAGE is an incredible (if sometimes problematic) comedy helmed by the iconic duo of Nichols and May. Immensely quotable and uncomfortably relevant 30 years after its release, THE BIRDCAGE is a classic, and we’re so excited to screen it as part of Queer Film Theory 101!

\nKyun-woo (Cha Tae-hyun) is a do-good type who has never stepped out of line a day in his life. When he meets The Girl (Jun Ji-hyun) drunk as a skunk on a subway platform, his life turns upside down. The two begin to date, much to Kyun-woo’s trepidation, but what he soon realizes is The Girl’s liveliness is masking a deep sadness that he cannot cure.
\nJun Ji-hyun was the It Girl of South Korea in the 2000s, and her work with romance master Kwak Jae-yong is some of her best. MY SASSY GIRL is a beautiful blend of comedy and melodrama, and a touching story about two people being in the right place at the wrong time.

The film became notorious at the time of its release for a blood-drenched sex scene between Angel and Favorite's daughter, Epiphany Proudfoot – particularly since she was played by Lisa Bonet, star of the wholesome TV hit The Cosby Show – that had to be trimmed to avoid an X rating.
\nToday, ANGEL HEART stands as one of the most darkly stylish horror films of the late '80s, a period when studios had otherwise largely abandoned the genre in the wake of the slasher boom. Its sinister charm is best appreciated on the big screen, so come and witness the 4K restoration!
