Sommelier Cinema

Sommelier Cinema is a new series that couples films that compel audience members to imbibe fine wines with wine experts who curate a series of wines paired perfectly to the movie of the evening.  This series offers an opportunity for the Alamo to feature some of Austin’s most respected wine experts and share some exciting and extravagant wines.  Included in the price of the ticket is a collection of wines that will swell your hearts.

Austin-based wine experts will join us to present films of all types: Foreign films, American independents, even old Hollywood films have the power to push us towards long stemmed glasses and a full nose of fruity aromas. Now we’re going to celebrate that instinct.

Our wine experts, culled from the best newspapers, bars, and wine blogs this city has to offer, will then be choosing three or four wines according to the films we’ve selected. If a film romanticizes the culture of Lyon, for instance, expect a series of Côtes du Rhônes. If a picture champions the decadence of the aristocracy, there may be a sampling of Champagnes in your future. Whatever the perfect wine for the film-occasion, our guest sommeliers will have them uncorked and ready for tasting.

Every audience member gets the three-or-four-wine flight selected by our guest. The sommelier will give a short presentation about the wines, their history, and why they were chosen. We’ll also get a quick lesson in how to drink wine, what to look for in these particular varietals/blends/regions, and why drinking these fine wines is the ultimate pleasure. Basically, it’s a crash course in the luxurious pursuit of oenology, and we’ll be highlighting wines that may be new to some, and will surely enhance your palate.

Once we’ve learned about the finer points of our beverages, then it’s time to watch a film and sip passionately.
