"No movie featuring Harry Dean Stanton in a supporting role can be altogether bad,” Roger Ebert once wrote. Actually, turns out, the hard-workin' yet often overlooked actor with the chronic hangdog expression has lent his talents to many a film that are balls-out awesome. And all throughout January The Late Show is bringing some of the best of his best.
Based on the pulp novel by author Barry Gifford, WILD AT HEART follows Sailor Ripley and Lula Pace Fortune, a young couple of outcasts who leave their hometown of Cape Fear, North Carolina, and strike out on their own. This “road movie” is a journey into the supernatural and the violent, bringing to light the dark side of America and the open road. Adapted for the screen and directed by master director David Lynch (TWIN PEAKS, BLUE VELVET, ERASERHEAD) and starring prime-era Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern, this film is one of Lynch’s finest efforts, and features a supporting cast of some of the greatest character actors of the 1980s and ‘90s, including HARRY DEAN STANTON(!), Willem Dafoe, Crispin Glover, and Isabella Rosellini.
