In the not too distant future, a video game exists that is powered not by electricity, but instead by the human body. There are no controllers, no operations manual or guide, only the signature Cronenbergian "bio-port," a new orifice through which human beings enter the organic game world of eXistenZ.
An independent game designer greeted with celebrity status, Allegra Geller (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is on the run from a deadly assassin, who may or may not have damaged her game with a virus. The only way for her to find out is to delve into the world of the game itself. When she and an ambitious marketing trainee, Ted Pikul (Jude Law) plug in, the lines between worlds begin to blur. When everything that distinguishes reality from the game world (and vice-versa) begins to crumble around them, each is faced with an alarming choice: which is preferable, the real world or the virtual one?
eXistenZ is a modern classic, one of David Cronenberg's best and most underrated pictures, dutifully documenting the relationship between man and machine, as well as the psychosis induced by, and consequences of, virtual actions in a deafeningly real, physical world. (Sam Prime)
