Before they warmed the cockles of hearts and dropped jaws the world over with that cozy bit of eye candy, AMELIE, Belgian filmmakers Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet thrilled and unsettled theatergoers -- and no doubt drove untold legions of stoned college students of the '90s into deep delight and mind-looping paranoia -- with this fantastical dark fairy tale for adults. A tale of seaport towns, missing ragamuffin children, heroic circus strongmen (the ever badass Ron Perlman), creepy crime boss Siamese-twin sisters, fleas, cloned henchmen, sentient giant brains in jars, and a dream-deprived mad scientist bent on unlocking the secret of those nocturnal visions via stolen children. It's an utterly arresting fantasy that seems to mash up the best parts of Terry Gilliam's BRAZIL with the feel of Tom Waits' Island years-era recordings into one cohesive slightly steampunk-flavored cinematic goulash. Do your brain and eyes a favor and see it on the big screen. And unlike sophomore year, let’s not freak out this time, ok?
