Nominated for 10 Academy Awards, THE ARTIST is the newest film from The Weinstein Company to receive exuberant praise from critics. A tribute to the era of Hollywood silent films, THE ARTIST is a departure for director Michel Hazanavicius, whose previous films include the hilarious OSS 117 spy spoofs. In contrast, THE ARTIST is a stunning, solemn film that is silent for almost all of its running time, with breathtaking cinematography and impeccable performances by Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell and Malcolm McDowell.
Dujardin plays silent film star George Valentin in 1927 Hollywood, a talented but self-destructive actor who dreads the onset of "talkie" films and squanders the love of the beautiful young dancer who adores him (Bejo). The film, while elegant and restrained, is surprisingly funny and always riveting. Dujardin won best actor at Cannes for his revealing performance, and the film is nominated for 10 Academy Awards including Best Actor (Jean Dujardin), Best Supporting Actress (Bernice Bejo), Best Picture and Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius). With its majestic, black and white cinematography, THE ARTIST is a film that must be experienced in a theater. (Meredith Borders)
