When the clumsy, timid Professor Julius Kelp is humiliated by a jock bully, he concocts a potion that transforms him into a suave, arrogant lounge singer named Buddy Love. A knock-out to ladies, Buddy becomes the toast of campus as he entertains the crowds that flock to see him at the Purple Pit. Even Stella, Kelp's secretly-adored student, can't help but be drawn to Buddy, as much as she despises him. Each time Kelp takes the formula, he finds it wears off at the most inopportune times - one moment he's slickly crooning as Buddy, then suddenly the honking tone of Kelp prevails, the buck teeth protruding instantaneously. Jerry Lewis's parody of the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story is among his funniest movies, complete with hilarious gags including Kelp's attempts to beef up with exercise.
