Based upon the life of Joseph Merrick, THE ELEPHANT MAN is a moving portrait of one misshapen man's struggle to find and maintain his dignity amidst the horrors and hardships of 19th-century London. David Lynch implicates us all in the voyeurism of the Victorian freak show as we watch the disfigured Merrick (John Hurt) progress from stinking slum to high society. His benefactor, Dr Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins) believes he is working to restore his patient’s dignity, but Lynch undercuts his patronage, and our sentimental response, by pitilessly skewering the self-deception at the heart of supposedly civilised behaviour.
