To get ready for the release of Wes Anderson's THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL we're playing some of our favorite Anderson movies

When it was initially released THE DARJEELING LIMITED, like THE LIFE AQUATIC before it, was considered another entry by Anderson that fell short of his trifecta of BOTTLE ROCKET, RUSHMORE, and THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS.

Since then, though, the film has starting to gain recognition as one of Anderson's major achievements, and rightly so.

Focusing on the journey three brothers, all lost souls, embark through the idiosyncratic and hypnotic world of India DARJEELING is a perfect canvas for Anderson to work his visual magic. The production, set and costume design all encompass his patented artificial style. What makes DARJEELING so special and affecting, though, is the emotional core that slowly builds.

The film starts off as a funny, offbeat slapstick comedy that slowly becomes something much more mature and layered.

Allowing this balancing act to work so well are the three leads; Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman. All three are excellent.

Overall, DARJEELING is Anderson working in high gear. Packing difficult-to-execute material into a breezy 90 minutes while making sure it all looks gorgeous in the process. (R.J. LaForce)
