SUNRISE is one of the all-time classics of American silent cinema. Directed by German expressionist F.W. Murnau, SUNRISE is a morality tale on the indiscretion of a married farmer. Tempted by the lure of the bustling cityscape in the form of a vacationing woman, the farmer is seduced into a lurid affair. His humble wife and child none the wiser, the romantic tryst soon spirals out of control when the woman from the city suggests that he sell the farm and drown his wife, so that they might start a new life together. What follows is a man's personal battle between an honest life of little means in the countryside or a life ill-begotten in the modern grid of the city. Winner of 3 Academy Awards (Best Actress, Best Cinematography, and Best Picture -- the first awards of their kind at the inaugural Academy Award presentation on May 29th, 1929), SUNRISE is presented on 35mm with an original live score courtesy of local Austin favorite and friends of the Drafthouse, My Education. Don't miss this very special screening!
David Fricke of Rolling Stone called My Education's sound "advanced ecstasy" and announced the band as his "surprise find" at SXSW 2005, but plenty of fans from central Texas and all around the globe already knew that My Education is better than drugs: the pulse-pounding emotion of their visceral live shows and the lyrical beauty and dark grandeur of their recorded output has heralded this from the get-go.
"F.W. Murnau's SUNRISE conquered time and gravity with a freedom that was startling to its first audiences. To see it today is to be astonished by the boldness of its visual experimentation." -Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
