It’s been said that a movie is only as good as its villain. If that’s the case, then STAR TREK II is the best movie ever made. Ricardo Montalban chews a big, ragged hole in the universe as the vengeful intergalactic exile Kahn, a more or less forgotten enemy of the Starship Enterprise crew.

But after decades of burning hatred, he’s armed with the secrets of life, some very unconventional alien weaponry, and a rabid desire to wipe out Kirk, Spock and company once and for all. “I grew up watching Star Trek every day on WPIX in New York City, often staying up until midnight to catch an episode.

The crew of the Starship Enterprise were my heroes. Walking into Wrath of Khan I had heard rumors about what was to come, but I never expected something with so much weight, so much impact.

I still remember driving home in the back of my mom’s Corolla, feeling a weird mixture of grief, anger and elation.

These kinds of movies were supposed to be fun or exciting, but STAR TREK II had the nerve to be complex as well. To this day I think Wrath of Khan is the pinnacle to which all summer movies should aspire: heavy in thrilling action, rich in character and filled with earned emotion.
