Sommelier Cinema is our series that invites guest experts to curate a wine flight to a film that makes you want to drink. We also provide a cheese plate from Austin’s greatest cheese supply, Antonelli’s Cheese Shop. So far it has basically been the greatest experience anyone has ever offered in the history of viticulture. Watching a fantastic film, drinking four luscious wines, a plate of exquisite cheese – let’s just say it’s a highly pleasurable combination.
This time out, we’re reaching into the sophistication vaults for Louis Malle’s tour de force of talk, MY DINNER WITH ANDRE. This arthouse favorite from 1981 features Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory as they have a passionate and insightful dinner conversation. Over the course of the evening, a few glasses of wine and some French food with hard-to-pronounce names, the two have a sprawling discussion about everything from the state of the theatre to life itself and man’s quest to find meaning in it.
Although sometimes misunderstood as a boring gabfest by those who have never seen it, MY DINNER WITH ANDRE is actually a fascinating testament to the power of words to engage the imagination; by the end of the film, you’ll be surprised at how little you see and yet how vivid all of the stories have been.
