While adolescence is a challenging time for just about everyone, it's particularly tough for the kids Grace (Brie Larson) is watching over. Grace is one of the supervisors at Short Term 12, a foster-care facility that provides treatment for at-risk teenagers, most of them from broken homes and many of them saddled with shattered spirits.

If Grace seems genuinely in touch with the feelings these young people are going through, it may be because she has her own troubled past. Although she encourages the kids to discuss what they're experiencing, Grace has enormous difficulties opening up, even to her co-worker and fiance, Mason (John Gallagher Jr.).

Grace's life is about to be rocked by two potentially life-changing events, as well as the arrival at the facility of the sullen, mysterious Jayden (Kaitlyn Dever). In Jayden's stand-offish style and barely suppressed rage, Grace sees hints of herself. But in order to make a breakthrough with Jayden, Grace will have to finally confront her own fears and apprehensions.

SHORT TERM 12 evolved from writer-director Destin Daniel Cretton's personal experiences working at a youth facility. In 2008, Cretton created a short film titled SHORT TERM 12, which won major awards at the Sundance Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival, Boston Independent Film Festival and Seattle International Film Festival.

"SHORT TERM 12 is a small wonder, a film of exceptional naturalness and empathy that takes material about troubled teenagers and young adults that could have been generic and turns it into something moving and intimate." -- Kennth Turan, Los Angeles Times

"What might seem on paper a cloyingly sentimental heartwarmer becomes, in Cretton's hands, a briskly believable, often funny, always invigorating and ultimately wrenching story of emotional fortitude." -- Bob Mondello, National Public Radio

"Filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton pulls off a tricky balancing act in SHORT TERM 12, which could easily have become a colossal downer if played to melodramatic excess. Larson’s subtle, unsentimental work draws you into her character’s conflicts" -- Lou Lumenick, NewY ork Post
