Joss Whedon, the Oscar and Emmy-nominated writer/director responsible for the worldwide television phenomena of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and the recent outrageously successful and acclaimed THE AVENGERS first applied his trademark compassion and wit to the silver screen by telling the story of a small band of galactic outcasts 500 years in the future in his feature film directorial debut, SERENITY.
The film centers around Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family - squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal. Based off of Whedon's unjustly short-lived show FIREFLY, this may just be Whedon's most ambitious and fun attempt at genre-bending, this time combining sci-fi and western elements. Funny and extremely entertaining, SERENITY is a satisfying final adventure for Malcom and his crew.
This screening is an official Can't Stop the Serenity event and all proceeds will go towards supporting Equality Now in their work for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women around the world.
