"You bought this house with the profits of porno!"

Divine switched gears from her usual hellraiser character for her role as Francine Fishpaw, a very put-upon mother who tries to keep love in her family. With a porn theater owner as a husband, a troubled shoe-obsessed son, a wild good-time girl for a daughter, and a money-grubbing mother, this proves hard work for poor Francine. When she catches her husband cheating on her, she is sent over the edge into full-on alchoholism. A chance meeting at a gruesome car accident puts her in the tender paws of Todd Tomorrow, who swears he can make it all better.

Although remarkably cleaner than most of his other movies, John Waters still imbues POLYESTER with plenty of naughtiness and absurd quotable lines, plus the lovable Edith Massey, here as an unlikely debutante. Also, songs on the soundtrack were co-written by Debbie Harry, with the Francince/Todd love montage song sung by Bill Murray!

Screening in 35mm film.
