“Today we are cancelling the apocalypse!”

Guillermo Del Toro is back. The director who took the meager budgets of films like PAN’S LABYRINTH and HELLBOY 1-2 and made them look like epic tentpoles now gets to show everybody what he can do with an actual blockbuster bankroll and the results are nothing less than astounding.

When legions of monstrous creatures started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant beasts, a special type of weapon was devised: GIGANTIC FIGHTING ROBOTS controlled by human pilots! But even these bots are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless beasts. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to some unlikely heroes - a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) - who are teamed to pilot a legendary but seemingly obsolete mech from the past. Together, they stand as makind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

There is no movie in 2013 that has us more excited. Del Toro has spent just as much time building the world and characters of PACIFIC RIM as he has the monsters and robots, but this movie is all about size. The spectacle here is beyond huge and our anticipation is even bigger. PACIFIC RIM makes every other movie this summer feel puny in comparison.
