Where art thou, Ralph Bakshi?
Once one of the most promising animators to ever leap into the entertainment business, the director of FRITZ THE CAT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS hasn’t released a new feature-length film since 1994. With his distinctive style and penchant for rotoscoping (animating over live-action film), Bakshi’s influence can be seen in everything from Pixar to ATTACK THE BLOCK to Kanye West music videos.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of one of Bakshi’s most memorable films, WIZARDS. Set in a post-apocalyptic future, WIZARDS is the tale of a group of faire folk who must fight an evil sorcerer who has matched his own magic with ancient unearthed Nazi technology.
In this mindtrip of an animated film, you’ll get magic, dark evil, giant monsters and some of the trippiest animated sequences you’ve ever seen. Brains will melt, imaginations will be stoked and Houston audiences will, at least for one more Saturday evening, realize the power contained in one of Ralph Bakshi’s brushstrokes. (Robert Saucedo)
