Of all the masterful works of suspense created over the course of his career, NORTH BY NORTHWEST is truly the quintessential Alfred Hitchcock movie. If PSYCHO made the world aware of how frightening showers can be, this film introduced us to an improbably terrifying crop duster.  The suspense is punctuated by acutely funny jabs throughout, elevating this mistaken identity, innocent-man-on-the-run tale to a level of total magic.

It also features one of the best of the director’s trademark cameos.

Alfred Hitchcock began his cinematic storytelling career with silent films and grew his legacy from there. But music came to play a huge role in his work, thanks to composer Bernard Herrmann, best known for the high pitch staccato sounds of the shower scene in PSYCHO.  The duo’s work in NORTH BY NORTHWEST punctuates an amazing performance by the witty and yet classy Cary Grant. The opening title of this film features one of the most iconic sequences by graphic designer Saul Bass and the opportunity to see it on the silver screen is not to be missed.

The film achieves a rare level of entertainment that is both wickedly funny and to this day has viewers clutching seats.  NORTH BY NORTHWEST is more than just a thriller, it is a national treasure. If you’ve already seen this sensational Grant/Hitchcock collaboration 100 times, it’s probably time to see it again. And if this is the your first time...don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone.  (John Gross)
