Too many behind-the-scenes music docs follow the rise and fall of “Band X” with usual references to drugs, booze, one-night stands, and bickering, but the story of Fishbone is far more interesting and completely unique. One of the major SoCal live bands of the 80s, Fishbone intriguingly combined punk, metal, funk, ska, and jazz and got a record contract. But no music executive quite knew how to categorize a group of Black musicians who seemed able to play every style. Marketing Fishbone became a commercial nightmare. Even though the band members, especially Angelo Moore and Kendall Jones, had been best friends since being bused from South Central L.A. to public schools in “the Valley,” the band eventually imploded because of the influence of a cult on Kendall and excessive playing of the Theremin by Angelo. With animation, live performances, interviews with well-known fans, and “then and now” footage of the band and its members, the filmmakers have fashioned a fascinating study of a band that should have been mega-big. There is still time. (Austin Film Society)
