This is part of our months-long Saturday afternoon COMPLETE MARX BROTHERS RETROSPECTIVE!

At 111 minutes A DAY AT THE RACES is a Marx brothers epic! But it has so many great gags from doctors, bookies and everyone in between, that the time flies by.

The second collaboration between the Marx brothers and Irving Thalberg of MGM sees the trio venture into the world of horse racing. An intricate plot (for the Marxes) involving an unsuccessful hospital, jockeys, gambling, scheming and double-crossing...all in the name of frenzied fun.

On a sad note, Thalberg passed away unexpectedly during production. On the plus side his presence was still able to solidify the kind of support and freedom the Marxes needed to succeed to their highest levels. And it shows as A DAY AT THE RACES remains one of their absolute finest works.
