MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA with Live Score by Austin musician Justin Sherburn and six-piece group Montopolis!!
Few films should ever be called revolutionary and MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA is just that. Director Dziga Vertov had every intention on making this a film like no other, both technically and narratively. In fact he had no story in mind when he was shooting all over the Soviet Union making it almost impossible to edit a cohesive film from his beautiful takes. The overall product, however, is anything but muddled and incoherent. Instead it is a visual essay on the emerging ideology of machine over man in the Soviet Union and also a document on the filmmaking process, as Vertov breaks the fourth wall from the start so his efforts of making the film are, themselves, a part of the film itself.
Today this type of pseudo-documentary/avant garde style is anything but new. On top of creating a whole new “kind” of film, Vertov also employs many technical achievements including quick-cut editing, double exposure, freeze frames, split screens, and even modern cinematic staples of close-ups and tracking shots. This truly original, revolutionary, and important film is not one that cinephiles and historians should miss.
And to make the experience even greater there will be a live score by Austin musician Justin Sherburn and six-piece group Montopolis to accompany the film. You can visit Justin Sherburn's website HERE.
