"We are noodle folk," Po's father tells him. "Broth runs through our veins." But Po, the paunchy hero of KUNG FU PANDA, believes he comes from different stock: He entertains fantasies of being the Dragon Warrior, the ultimate fighting machine.

A lively, gorgeously animated and consistently funny fable about fulfilling your potential and exceeding even your own expectations, KUNG FU PANDA scores as both a delightful spoof of martial arts movies and as a showcase for Jack Black, who provides the voice for Po.

But Black is only one of the potent personalities in PANDA. Dustin Hoffman puts a wry spin on the lectures of Master Shifu, a diminutive red panda who is initially appalled by Po's lack of agility and coordination. Angelina Jolie brings convincing cockiness to Tigress, the champion who leads the awe-inspiring band of fighters known as the Furious Five, and Ian McShane's ominous growl makes the fiercely proud snow leopard Tai Lung a first-rate nemesis.

It's also apparent that writers Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger have spent considerable time studying the speeches from Hong Kong cinema. "The only souvenirs we collect here are bloody knuckles and broken bones!" Master Shifu declares when Po tries to smuggle a few little treasures out of the Furious Five's training ground. Bruce Lee couldn't have said it any better himself. (James Sanford)
