Since Graveyard Shift, Houston’s horror movie series, began almost two years ago, we have constantly received requests from guests to screen Italian horror films. This February, we’re proud to present two 35mm screenings of THE BEYOND, Lucio Fulci’s 1981 classic tale of hellbred swamp horrors.
The second film in Fulci’s Gates of Hell trilogy, THE BEYOND was originally released in America under the name SEVEN DOORS OF DEATH. With its violence trimmed down, this neutered version of THE BEYOND was the only BEYOND most American horror fans were familiar with until, in 1998, Grindhouse Releasing teamed with Quentin Tarantino’s Rolling Thunder Production Company to re-master and re-release the original, uncut version of the film. It is this version of the film we will be screening twice this February.
Set in Louisiana, THE BEYOND begins with the brutal murder of a suspected warlock – an act that paves the way for a gate to hell to open under the Seven Doors Hotel. Decades pass and a woman from New York inherits the hotel – planning to reopen it. The activity around the hotel triggers the dormant hellgate – inviting visitations from the damned and a whole heaping of bloody murder and tarantula attacks. Fulci is at his finest with this traumatizing, gore-filled shockfest. From melting bodies to ever-stoic zombie to canine mauling, THE BEYOND is full of a thousand ways for you to lose your lunch.
For those sturdy in stomach, though, we’ll be offering up all-you-can-eat gumbo at our Vintage Park screening. This food special is to celebrate the opening of our latest Houston Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.
So grab your tickets today and prep yourself for a night of screaming, slurping and spiders!
