Join us this October for GAME OVER - a month-long celebration of video game culture. From the arcade to the home console, we're spotlighting some of the best (or at least first) video game movies!

"The worst thing I ever did." - Bob Hoskins

Join us for a 20th anniversary screening of SUPER MARIO BROS., the first big screen video game adaptation ever made. A polarizing film even upon its release, SUPER MARIO BROS. is an adaptation of the popular 1985 Nintendo video game made by people who had once had the game described to them while on a two-night bender. Taking a bright and cheery pixelated landscape of the video games and transforming into into a nightmarish and futuristic hellhole featuring bizarre dinosaur people, a scene-chewing Dennis Hopper and Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo in power boots, SUPER MARIO BROS. is a kaleidoscope of wrong ideas and confounding choices. But I'm here to say that the movie is worth another look.

The sheer imagination given to the film by the over ten(!) writers who worked on the script is staggering. What could have easily been a simplistic tale of plumbers smashing turtles became a decidedly kid-unfriendly tale that tackled evolution, feminism and creepy, melty mushroom-men. This is the movie that launched a thousand nightmares but it is also something entirely unique and of itself. This is moviemaking by committee and the committee lives in an insane asylum.

Join us in reevaluating one of the most critically-savaged films ever to escape from the '90s. There will be a Super Mario Brothers tournament before the game and apologies afterward.
