Unlike other treatments of historically famous lover Giacomo Casanova, Fellini's take is an epic odyssey that is equal parts sex comedy and surreal tragedy. Donald Sutherland plays the character as a hopelessly longing, somewhat pretentious dope who is trapped by his reputation as a great lover but unable to find emotional fulfillment or spiritual satisfaction despite his many physical conquests. Set to a hauntingly beautiful Nino Rota score and filmed with Fellini's typical eye for grotesque and graphically striking imagery, Casanova is an underappreciated, rarely screened gem that needs to be seen on the big screen.
