Before DESPERADO and ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO, there was EL MARIACHI – an action film shot for $7,000 in Ciudad Acuna. Intended to be released on home video in Mexico, the film was discovered by American distributors and Robert Rodriguez was launched into a career as an inventive director of kinetic action done on a dime.

Carlos Gallaro stars as a young mariachi whose attempt to find work in a new town leads to him being mistaken for a hitman and drawn into a skirmish between warring criminals. The lengths Rodriguez went through to shoot this movie for such little money is the stuff of legends. Despite the fact that EL MARIACHI was made for less than some film's catering budgets, the movie packs in more action, thrills and surprises than the majority of major Hollywood action movies released in any given year.
