DETENTION is an apocalyptic fantasy, horror, science fiction, action-thriller, body-swapping, time-traveling teen romantic comedy where the students of Grizzly Lake must survive their final year of high school. Standing in their way is Cinderhella, a slasher-movie killer who has seemingly come to life and is preying on the school's student body. As the clock ticks and the bodies pile up, the likely suspects are embroiled in a race against time to stop Cinderhella and ultimately save the world...only if they can get out of detention.

Professed movie lover/native Texan/music video & commercial director Joseph Kahn self-financed this passion project after the world took a collective shit on him for misunderstanding his self-reflexive, biker movie TORQUE. After the failure of that film, Kahn said, "If I’m going to financially fail, then I really want to go balls out. And therefore I’m going to take my own money and do it my own way, and if I’m going to fail spectacularly, I’m going to bet everything on it."

DETENTION blew onto the scene at SXSW in 2011, but Kahn was, again, critically misunderstood despite a rapturous response from the audience. But, this film operates on so many levels and can be enjoyed in so many ways. It’s frenetic, deliberate, and as Badass Digest puts it, “a pop culture tempest that blows through dozens of different genres and hundreds of different references and nails every single one of them.” It’s a challenging movie, but it’s the movie Joseph Kahn wanted to make, start to finish, which is why the Alamo Drafthouse is giving you another opportunity to give this film the audience it deserves with Joseph Kahn himself in attendance for a post-show Q & A.
