WITH PUNK ROCK IDOL AND LITERARY LEGEND RICHARD HELL IN PERSON!!
If you took the most misanthropic private detective in the world, injected him with 10,000ccs of testosterone and kicked him down the elevator shaft of a burning building, you’d still only be halfway to Mike Hammer. Pulp author Mickey Spillane’s two-fisted human wrecking ball had been around since the mid-‘40s, but it wasn’t until 1955 that the character blossomed into a crushing pillar of film noir wrath. Masterfully played with snide, pugilistic hatred by Ralph Meeker, Hammer sets out on a rampage of crime-fighting, cop-fighting, and every other type of fighting he can get his meaty mitts on. Along the way, he’ll orbit a few heavenly bodies and get embroiled in a pitch black web of intrigue involving a radioactive suitcase (which would later reappear in films like REPO MAN to PULP FICTION). It’s supreme Hollywood masculinity, stinking drunk and stained with sweat, from visionary blue collar filmmaker Robert Aldrich. Join us for the ultimate experience in mid-century sex and violence, served Hammer style.
ALSO! Richard Hell will be presenting an additional Cinema Club of TOUCH OF EVIL following this screening as well as the Film Foundation Series screening of KING KONG on 5/28.
