An immensely stylish melding of film noir and sci-fi from director Alex Proyas, DARK CITY was a pretty big disappointment when it first debuted at the box office back in '98. Some of us might actually remember working at the multiplex that summer and peeking in on virtually empty houses while it played and then disappeared in, like, a week. But like BLADE RUNNER -- certainly a big inspiration for this unique thriller -- time has actually been pretty kind to DARK CITY. A cult has risen up around it. Critics have praised it. The film has been given deluxe DVD and Blu-ray release. But you don't get to see it up on the big screen all that often.
And so we unoffficially kick off Cine Geek, our new series dedicated to the best of science fiction, fantasy and animation, with this visually innovative genre mashup about a man accused of brutal murders and fighting for his very mind against creepy, seemingly omnipotent beings. Eye candy bonus: The film's German expressionism-inspired sets.
