Life is the accumulation of small moments, and no movie has ever shown that better than Richard Linklater’s BOYHOOD. Shot over the course of twelve years, BOYHOOD shows us the arc of one boy as he grows up in Texas. Ellar Coltrane is the boy, and the experience of seeing him grow and change and mature is more spectacular than any big budget CGI special effect could hope to be.

Linklater’s cast (which includes Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as the boy’s separated parents) brings a human touch of honesty to a movie that is more interested in the day-to-day aspects of life than the sturm und drang of drama. There are big changes and dramatic moments, but BOYHOOD shows them how they really happen, not drowning in a sea of bombastic music and overheated performances.

BOYHOOD is so special, so magical, so unique, that you can’t believe it was actually made… and that it’s actually this good. Simple, direct and filled with the glowing summer light of truth, BOYHOOD is a movie that must be seen by anybody who has experienced growing up, or who still has some growing up to do.
