Home is where the heartache is in director John Wells' adaptation of Tracy Letts' Pulitzer Prize-winning black comedy about the woebegone Weston family. When matriarch Violet (Meryl Streep) summons her kids home after their father (Sam Shepard) abruptly vanishes, the reunion quickly turns into a series of verbal battles, alarming revelations and resurrected recriminations. The only things hotter than Violet's broiling, stuffy house are the tempers of the women inside it.

Sisters Barbara (Julia Roberts), Karen (Juliette Lewis) and Ivy (Julianne Nicholson) have each brought along plenty of psychological baggage: Barbara is trying to conceal her fractured relationships with her philandering husband (Ewan McGregor) and disgruntled daughter (Abigail Breslin), while free-spirit Karen parades around her latest lover (Dermot Mulroney) and evasive Ivy tries to hide her feelings for the new man in her life.

But pill-popping, saber-tongued Violet won't rest until she's dug up dirt on everybody ("I'm just truth-tellin'!" she crows) and pushed everyone's buttons as only she can. As it turns out, Violet's sister Mattie Fae (Margo Martindale) and her husband, Chris (Chris Cooper), have a few of their own scandalous skeletons to bring to the party. Even the Weston's new maid (Misty Upham) can't begin to clean up all the blood, sweat and tears.
