As Colorado prepares to host the USA Pro Cycling Challenge August 19th through the 25th, we are honoring the event and paying tribute to our rich cycling history with a special screening of AMERICAN FLYERS.  For the celebration, some of Colorado’s most dedicated cycling enthusiasts, organizations and participants in the film are breaking out vintage bikes, gear and production stories to share with cycling fans. Members of Colorado cycling royalty including Bob Shaver and Scott Christopher will be on hand to make this event fun and memorable.

Filmed extensively in Colorado with local competitors and cast, AMERICAN FLYERS exemplifies a time in racing when a good mustache was as important as a power bar. In the film, Marcus Sommers (Kevin Costner) recruits his wild and untamed brother (David Grant) to race side by side in cycling’s biggest challenge “The Hell of the West”.  Marcus’s motivation is driven by the prospect that David may fall to the same lethal affliction that killed their father. Not wanting to succumb to the “almost” legacy that defined his cycling career, Marcus seizes the moment and convinces David to take their ten speeds into high gear and head west together, accompanied by Sommer's spicy girlfriend (Rae Dawn Chong). The brother’s relationship has as many peaks and valleys as the Rocky Mountain roads where the race sequences were shot.  And the plot has some twists and turns of it’s own.

The real beauty of AMERICAN FLYERS, besides Kevin Costner’s awesome mustache and Colorado’s beautiful scenery is Director John Badham’s (SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, WAR GAMES) cinematic delivery of the “Hell of The West”.  While much of the film is a display of the 80’s lovable cheesiness, the mountain racing scenes shot in our magnificent state deliver the goods.  As Marcus and David race through the Rockies, they find common ground in battling against Marcus’s racing nemesis, Muzzin, the “Cannibal” (Luca Bercovici) and the peaks and valleys of the brother’s rocky relationship smooth away to cooperative ass-kicking, a sobering dose of reconciliation and… I am not going to spoil it.

So, hop on your bike, onto the Platte River bike path and take the Greenway Trail along the South Platte River right to the Alamo Drafthouse in Aspen Grove.  Giant Cycling World is kind enough to host a bike corral so your ride will be safe.  Join us for this awesome celebration as we prepare to root the world’s top pros competing in the UPCC… or what some of us call the modern day “Hell of the West”.
