ALPHAVILLE

Director Jean-Luc Godard
Year 1965
Starring Eddie Constantine, Anna Karina
Run Time 99min

Jean-Luc Godard's science fiction crime drama utilizes French B-movie character Lemmy Caution (as always, portrayed by Eddie Constantine), here as a detective with a mission to destroy the totalitarian leader of Alphaville - a sentient computer run amok. Along the way he meets Natacha (Anna Karina), and the two fall in love as they cross an oppressive landscape which in reality consists of carefully selected locations in Paris that pieced together form a futuristic city. The plot is beside the point for Godard as usual - what we have to revel in here is gorgeous photography, a grisled Constantine, and the emotional gut-punch that Karina can deliver among all the smarty-pants moviemaking. This brand new restoration features a new translation and subtitles.
