In 1841, Northrup, a free African-American violinist and writer from New York, was drugged, kidnapped and sold into slavery in Louisiana by a pair of unscrupulous wheeler-dealers who had supposedly wanted to hire him as a musician in their traveling circus. Sadly, this was not an uncommon occurance in pre-Civil War America after the U.S. outlawed the import of slaves from other countries.

British director Steve McQueen's drama details Northrup's struggle to escape the hellish Southern plantations where he was forced to work. To protect himself, Northrup kept his true identity a secret for years. There were numerous betrayals, savage attacks and perilous situations to survive before he could regain his freedom and reunite with his family.

"A scarifying, unblinking portrayal of life as it was for tens of thousands of people less than 200 years ago. It pulls no punches." -- Paul ManInnes, The Guardian

"A landmark of cruelty and transcendence."-- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly
