If you've never seen the fever dream that is THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI ACROSS THE 8TH DIMENSION, you're just going to have to take it on faith when I say that it is a near perfect distillation of '80s sci-fi cinema. It's the kind of stuff that no exec would green-light today and, probably because of this, nearly every lovin' frame of this cheeky transdimensional adventure is jam-packed with mind-melting fun. Why, just behold the plot: Peter Weller stars as Buckaroo Banzai, leading surgeon/inventor/guitar-slinger who must battle the soulless Lectroids from the 8th Dimension! His weapons are advanced, his wits are sharp, and his #1 pal is JEFF GOLDBLUM in oversized cowboy duds. In fact, he has an entire posse of awesome friends with names like "Perfect Tommy" and "Rawhide," the President of the U.S. is always calling him for advice, his girlfriend is an utterly smokin' hot Ellen Barkin, and he drops little nuggets of Zen like the one at the end of this scene:
He also looks damn smart in a bowtie, especially in the BEST end credit montage ever created. Such a great sequence, in fact, they rightfully based the film's trailer around it. [Full disclosure: If there is heaven, I sure hope it's just this montage over and over and over. ]
If you have seen BUCKAROO before, then you know you HAVE to watch this staple of your VHS-renting and/or late-night cable TV-watching formative years projected on the BIG screen in glorious 35mm. So get off your Big-Booté, throw on your skinny tie and blazer with the oversized shoulders, hop in your rocket car, and get yourself to Ritz this weekend!
