THE WIND RISES at the Alamo

"To see THE WIND RISES is to simultaneously marvel at the work of a master and regret that this film is likely his last." --Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

Here at the Alamo, we love Hayao Miyazaki and we know our customers love him too. We love Miyazaki so much that not only have we been screening his repertory titles all month as part of Miyazaki Madness at the Village, but last night we offered a special FREE advance screening of his upcoming movie, THE WIND RISES. In honor of the main character, Jiro, the audience launched their own paper airplanes.

About the movie: In THE WIND RISES, Jiro dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical designer Caproni. Nearsighted from a young age and unable to be a pilot, Jiro joins a major Japanese engineering company in 1927 and becomes one of the worlds most innovative and accomplished airplane designers. The film chronicles much of his life, depicting key historical events, including the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the Great Depression, the tuberculosis epidemic and Japans plunge into war. Jiro meets and falls in love with Nahoko, and grows and cherishes his friendship with his colleague Honjo. Writer and director Hayao Miyazaki pays tribute to engineer Jiro Horikoshi and author Tatsuo Hori in this epic tale of love, perseverance, and the challenges of living and making choices in a turbulent world.

All the Miyazaki titles are special in their own way, but this one is extra special because Miyazaki has declared it his last. If you didn't get to attend last night don't be alarmed. THE WIND RISES opens at the Alamo Slaughter Lane on 2/28 so you can still see it in the theater.

Most of the folks who were invited to this show are Alamo Victory members. We were able to generate a list of Victory Members who have attended a Miyazaki Madness screening and invite them to this event before we invited anyone else. Membership in the Alamo Victory program is free. *Note: You can still catch screenings of PRINCESS MONONOKE and SPIRITED AWAY!
