The time has come

Everyone has been asking. Now, we finally have an answer.

The time has come

Mark your calendar for Nov. 18: That's the date for the Grand Opening of Kalamazoo's Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. (Want to get an early taste of the Alamo experience? Join us for our staff training days Nov. 15, 16 and 17 and get 50% off food and non-alcoholic beverages.)

“We at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema are excited to become a part of the Kalamazoo community,” said Tim League, CEO and founder of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. “We look forward to sharing our enthusiasm for great films, food and beer with Western Michigan.”

The 10 theaters feature Sony 4k digital projection, equipped for both high-frame-rate and RealD 3D presentations. And there isn't a bad seat in the house: The theater interiors have been designed to provide space for our “ninja servers” to pick up orders and deliver your food and drinks. The layout also gives you great sightlines, no matter where you sit. As you might have heard, we have reserved seating in all auditoriums so that you can select your preferred seat when you buy.

We're welcoming special guest Michael Madsen for our ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 19. He'll host screenings of two of his signature films, director Quentin Tarantino's RESERVOIR DOGS on the 19th and director Ridley Scott's THELMA & LOUISE on the 20th; post-show Q&As will follow each show.

On Thursday, Nov. 21, we've got a double feature of THE HUNGER GAMES and THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE. We're also going to hold our own Anti-Hunger Games, with help from Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes and our friends at the People's Food Co-op: Beginning Nov. 20 and continuing throughy the holidays, we'll be collecting non-perishable food for Loaves & Fishes. Everyone who donates can register to win prizes.

As for the special programming Alamo is known for, November is Tough Ladies month, in honor of CATCHING FIRE's Katniss Everdeen. We're saluting unforgettable women of all kinds, including Barbara Stanwyck's sexy and shrewd con artist in THE LADY EVE, Rita Hayworth's fiery femme fatale in GILDA, Sissy Spacek's Oscar-winning role as country legend Loretta Lynn and the triumphant trio of sly secretaries -- Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton -- in NINE TO FIVE. For those who like ladies of action, check out Sigourney Weaver's Ripley in ALIENS and the unstoppable Linda Hamilton in TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY.

Want some interactive fun? Join us for the PULP FICTION QUOTE-ALONG on Nov. 20, or join in our first TOTALLY '80s SING-ALONG on Nov. 22. If your musical tastes run to something a bit more contemporary, put on your “Suit and Tie,” check yourself in your “Mirrors” and then “Take Back the Night” at our JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE SING-ALONG on Nov. 30.

As if the movies, food and drinks weren't enough of an incentive, we've got something else for you: Victory. That's the name of our free program to reward loyal Alamo customers.

Enroll in Victory at and every time you buy tickets you're eligible for discount coupons, invitations to private screenings and other surprises. You'll also get our weekly newsletter with updates on new releases, special events and details on our specialty programming.

“We’ve been talking about instituting a rewards program for years, but were resistant to anything like a standard punch card,” says Alamo founder and CEO Tim League. “We’ve been in development for over a year on Alamo Victory and are really proud of the results. We will be able to surprise our guests with meaningful rewards and cool unique events.”

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is hiring over 150 employees locally. Want to be a part of the team? We're accepting applications for kitchen staff and servers. Visit for details.
