This special walking tour will take you into the historic Middle Field, an area where combat was so ferocious during the September 19, 1864 battle that it became known as "That Basin of Hell."  You'll hear Ed Bearss, the dean of our nation's Civil War historians, speak about the history of the battle - and SVBF staff talk about the ambitious plans to use this battlefield as model of protection, restoration, interpretation, education, and community involvement.

Reception

Copperhead - Advance Screening (4:00-6:00 pm)
The climax of the evening is a special advance screening of Copperhead, the new film by Ron Maxwell.  (Schededuled for release on on June 28.) Maxwell’s previous epic films of the Civil War Gettysburg (1993) and Gods and Generals (2003) have established him as cinema’s leading interpreter of that complex, lethal, heroic period in American history. Copperhead extends that study into the realm of small town American life, where the conflicts hundreds of miles from the battlefields are no less vigorous or violent.
