For nearly a century, motion pictures were solely produced by photochemical means -- shot on film.
In our modern age, we are in the midst of a digital revolution. We now have two methods to telling stories on the screen -- film and digital. While the two co-exist for the moment, digital is rapidly becoming the new standard for exhibition, distribution, access, preservation, and even filmmaking itself. Due in large part to the overwhelming influence of the Hollywood studios, their embrace of digitality may soon mean 35mm becomes the format of yesteryear, a forgotten and yet once essential element of "going to the movies."
Produced and narrated by Keanu Reeves, SIDE BY SIDE is a bold and daring film that tackles its subject matter while awash in a sea of transition. While many documentaries look back with objectivity at their subject, drawing conclusions from the 20/20 hindsight that time and history allow, SIDE BY SIDE tackles the hard-hitting questions from inside the maelstrom. Reeves and Director Christopher Kenneally assemble a remarkable list of modern filmmaking's most influential personalities, from Martin Scorsese to David Lynch to Steven Soderbergh, also including various film professionals who are not household names, but are nonetheless the leaders in their field. Most importantly, SIDE BY SIDE is a balance look at what is gained, what is lost, and what the future might hold due to this move towards digital technology. Each interviewee speaks for his/herself and openly articulates their opinion and preference as to film format. By assembling a star-studded line-up of bright, brilliant, professionals, the merits of each format are discussed in detail throughout and, while conclusions are left for the audience to draw, this inviting and powerful documentary encourages discussion long after the film has ended about this real, current issue.
