Yesterday, we lost a legend of the cinema. Zelda Rubinstein, best known as the spiritually gifted medium Tangina Barrons in the 1982 film POLTERGEIST, passed away on January 27 at the age of 76 after a long battle with various health issues.
She was a brilliant character actress, bringing to her roles a unique voice and figure that enabled her to add additional layers of depth to her already strong acting performances. Her distinctive style helped make so many of her roles so commanding and memorable.
We were fortunate enough to have Rubinstein visit us in October, 2008, when she hosted a TEEN WITCH sing-along and a Terror Thursday presentation of her film ANGUISH. She spoke with great wit and grace, and everyone who had a chance to meet her was impressed with her humility and the love and gratitude she felt for the people around her and the life she led. We feel blessed for getting a chance to meet this really impressive woman, an iconic figure in the horror cinema that we often try to celebrate at the Drafthouse.
Zelda, wherever you are, thank you for everything you've done for the movies. You are a true legend.
