As many of you have doubtless already heard, we had a great victory yesterday when a U.S. District Court overruled Prop 8, re-legalizing same-sex marriage in the state of California. While this isn't the sweeping triumph that will recognize same-sex couples in all 50 states (just wait, it's coming), it is a great step forward and a slap in the face of every bigot and hater in the world.
We've got a documentary playing at the Ritz this weekend about the Prop 8 fiasco. 8: THE MORMON PROPOSITION chronicles the controversial California vote that revoked the right for gays to be married. At the forefront of this crusade against same-sex love is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Mormons. The film examines the role of the Mormon Church on this historic and much-maligned civil rights reversal, and the ties and conclusions it draws will shock and disgust you.
Thankfully, this film's political bite has weakened this week, as we will be watching a film about a brief tragedy rather than an ongoing one. So, we say let's get together for these screenings and mock those hateful Mormons who almost got away with the great civil rights violation of our time. Let's drink alcohol, sip caffeine, and cop some feels as we celebrate our non-Mormonism proudly.
8: THE MORMON PROPOSITION - Saturday at 5pm and Sunday at 4:15 @The Ritz.
