Prep for ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND with five great music videos

This weekend marks the first of four screenings of ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, the breathtakingly beautiful tale of love and loss from director Michel Gondry.

A collaboration between Gondry and writer Charlie Kaufman, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet as lovers going through a break-up. Faced with too many painful memories, the two decide to undergo a new scientific breakthrough courtesy of Lacuna - a company that specializes in erasing unpleasant memories. When faced with the reality of actually losing the memories, though, the couple is forced to evaluate the total worth of a relationship. Can you take the good without the bad? To dabble in cliches, is it better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all?

Thankfully, Kaufman and Gondry are a lot less inclined to the cliched than yours truly. Together, the two work their respective magics to really drill deep into what it means to be in love and to let go of that love. Under their vision, outlandish ideas are made flesh and blood and the dreamscape of imagination is explored via the wizardry of Gondry - a man who makes watching a movie an experience akin to watching a magic trick.

Gondry has had mixed success as a feature film director. Films such as THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP and BE KIND REWIND have found a devoted audience but failed to ignite the box office (what's wrong with you people?!?!). His latest, MOOD INDIGO, is set for release from Drafthouse Films this summer (and it is very, very good!).

Where Gondry has found undeniable success, though, is as a director of music videos. Many of the in-camera tricks that Gondry showcases in his films where first developed though music videos for bands such as Foo Fighters, The White Strips and Björk. To get you in the mood for ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, here are five really great music videos from Michel Gondry for you to watch while the boss isn't looking.

EVERLONG - Foo Fighters

I love how this music video riffs on THE EVIL DEAD. More than that, though, I love how many of Michel Gondry's personal tics are on display. Gondry aparently really does have nightmares about his hands growing too large - a visual motif that would reappear in THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP

A video seemingly done in one shot, this exemplifies the entirety of Michel Gondry's career - making the impossible seem effortless. When you're watching the video, so many of the tricks seem so obvious and easy to replicate but I would wager a bet that there are not many people out there who could have dreamed up the inventiveness on display in this video or in films such as BE KIND REWIND.

COME INTO MY WORLD - Kylie Minogue

Another video that seems so simple yet was most likely impossibly complicated to pull off. A catchy song is turned into a time loop that I will happily admit to having obsessively studied. There's just so much going on in this video.

The partnership between Michel Gondry and Björk had led to some great videos so it's hard to pick just one but the video for Bachelorette really captures many of the visual motifs that would later pop up in Gondry's films - right up to MOOD INDIGO.

FELL IN LOVE WITH A GIRL - The White Stripes

Before THE LEGO MOVIE, Gondry created a full stop-motion video using the building blocks for the band The White Strips - just one of many videos the band and the director have collaborated on.
