Like insane cinema? Don’t miss CONFESSION OF MURDER this Sunday at Vintage Park

I love Korean cinema. Compared to most American movies, Korean cinema is a fresh of breath air – the filmmakers are operating on an entirely different wavelength than their US counterparts. Take CONFESSION OF MURDER, for example. The plot – A police officer must confront old demons when a serial killer he failed to catch returns fifteen years later – after the Korean statutes of limitations expire – and publishes a book titled “I am the Murderer.”

Under an American director, this could have been a tense psychological thriller that, while riveting, would have been not too dissimilar from the dozens of other tense psychological thrillers that get released in a given year. Under director Jeong Byeong-gil, though, CONFESSION OF MURDER is an insane hodgepodge of whodunit, heist, action and drama. There will be a quiet scene of remorse and contemplation and then a few minutes later an outrageous high-speed highway car chase or a murder plot involving venous snakes set lose in a swimming pool. This is Korean cinema at its finest – it is like eating a delicious peanut butter sandwich and then – halfway through a bit – finding the sandwich also has honey in it!

CONFESSION OF MURDER screens this Sunday at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema – Vintage Park as part of the Fantastic Fest tour. If you like boundary-pushing foreign films, relentless action and films that actually manage to surprise, don’t miss this advanced screening.

Jung Jae-young plays a detective who was left emotionally and physically scared after his final encounter with a serial killer. The killer still out there, the detective has never been able to move past the case. Old emotions heat up when the killer emerges from the shadows fifteen years later – past the point where he can be legally punished for his crimes – with a new book that details the gristly details of his actions. While he smugly takes in his new celebratory status, the killer unknowingly finds himself the target not only of the detective but of a group of vigilantes – family of his victims who have banded together to exact their own punishment.

CONFESSION OF MURDER is a movie that will thrill you, surprise you and – most importantly – entertain you. This is classic Hollywood storytelling the only place we’re seemingly getting it nowadays – from outside of Hollywood.  Don’t miss your chance to see CONFESSION OF MURDER this Sunday at Vintage Park.

"The film also fills the screen with spectacular stunt work, set pieces that thrill with both insanity and absurdity, and a generous helping of tension-releasing humor." - Rob Hunter, FIlm School Rejects
