Learn how to be a better romantic at this month’s screenings of SAY ANYTHING

If romantic comedies have taught America anything, it's that somewhere out there lives a hooker with a heart of gold just waiting to turn a rich prick into a good, honest man. If romantic comedies have taught America a second thing, it is that with the right amount of perseverance and patience, one's true love is around the corner. If Cameron Crowe's directorial debut, SAY ANYTHING... has taught us anything, it's that even action movie superstars were once baby-faced actors. John Cusack stars as Lloyd Dobler, a recent high school graduate who finds himself in love with Diane Court (Ione Skye). Thoughtful writing and powerful acting breathe life into one of the 80s best love stories. Like any great work of fiction, there's much truth to be gleaned from SAY ANYTHING. For the convenience of you, the faithful Alamo Drafthouse customer, we have conducted an in-depth study of the film and gleamed two essential life lessons:.

Kickboxing is the sport of the future – Throughout the film, Lloyd Dobler is constantly hyping the then up-and-coming sport of "kickboxing." Filmed in 1989, SAY ANYTHING succeeded where TEEN WOLF TOO failed in making kickboxing cool. After watching the film, I was instantly motivated to go to the nearest gym and train to be a kickboxer. Then I remembered that learning a sport is hard - especially one that involves kicking people in the face. I think instead I’ll just wait for a new future – one where skee-ball is the sport of choice.

Second, the key to a woman’s heart involves having good upper body strength. Sure it’s one thing to plan a gesture of romantic devotion by buying a boombox, grabbing your favorite Peter Gabriel cassette tape and wearing your favorite trench coat. But to actually stand outside a girl’s house and hold said boombox above your head for the duration of a song takes a lot of upper body strength. If you’re going to win the heart of the Ione Skye in your life, you better start by doing some push-ups and pull-ups.
