Speak Easy and Relive Prohibition-Era Shenanigans with John Hillcoat’s LAWLESS, Opening August 29th

John Hillcoat’s Palme d’Or-nominated gangster picture LAWLESS opens tomorrow, August 29th at many Alamo Drafthouse locations: Ritz, Village, Lake Creek, Slaughter Lane, KC – Mainstreet, and Winchester!

Hillcoat most recently directed the much-celebrated 2009 adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel THE ROAD, featuring a modestly sized, but larger than life, cast. A film that Esquire Magazine called “the most important movie of the year,” THE ROAD stars Viggo Mortensen, Robert Duvall, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, and relative newcomer Kodi Smit-McPhee. A post-apocalyptic father/son tale of survival, THE ROAD surprised and delighted fans of the source text and those discovering the novel as a big screen adaptation. Hillcoat’s follow-up feature has been eagerly anticipated by audiences ever since.

His latest picture, LAWLESS, is no less exciting than the last. Starring Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, and Guy Pearce, LAWLESS is an adaptation of the 2008 historical novel THE WETTEST COUNTY IN THE WORLD by Matt Bondurant. Set in Depression-era Virginia, LAWLESS tells the story of three roustabout brothers who make their living as rural bootleggers – brewing and selling illegal moonshine to the public in the midst of Prohibition. Led by the crooked and sneering Detective Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce), the law attempts to cut in on the brothers' business and turmoil breaks out in Franklin County. As the authorities demand a cut of the ill-gotten profits, the three find themselves flanked by double the trouble – jealous of their monopoly on moonshine, the erstwhile competition decides to take advantage of the touchy situation and act out with violence. Crime pays well enough for the young men, but doesn't last long when the greed that it begets may mean an early end.

Here’s what world-class critics nationwide are saying about LAWLESS:

“Bad-ass from start to finish.” – Richard Roeper, RichardRoeper.com

“A great deal of rowdy, crowd-pleasing fun.” – Eric D. Snider, Film.com

“Fueled by a brooding sense of dread, visceral bursts of violence, potent atmosphere and some juicy character portraits from a robust cast.” – David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter
